Auto Safety Facts

Some statistics:

1. Every year approximately 26,000 are killed in Motor Vehicle Crash (MVC) in the U.S.

2. Seat belts can reduce the risk of serious injury and death.2

Myths and Facts about Seat Belts5:

FACT: Most injuries and deaths occur at speeds less than 40mph on surface streets—within 25 miles of home. Everyday driving to your neighbor’s home, to school, or to the corner store poses the greatest danger.3 In a frontal collision occurring at 30 mph, the car comes to an abrupt stop and the person who is not wearing a seat belt moves forward at 30 mph and hits the windshield. This is the same velocity a person falling from the top of a three-story building would experience when hitting the ground.5

FACT: Air bags provide additional protection in frontal crashes. Motorists not wearing seat belts may be thrown up and over the airbag or slide under the air bag. Air bags will not help in side or rear impact or rollover crashes.3 Air bags are an additional form of protection and most are designed to deploy only in moderate-to-severe frontal crashes. 4 Air bags by themselves only reduce serious injury or deaths by 12%.1 Air bags are more effective when you are buckled up and seated at least 10 inches away. 6

FACT: In an accident, if the shoulder strap is worn under the arm, it can cause serious rib fractures, lung injuries and abdominal injuries. 1 If the seat belt is rubbing the face or neck, try moving the seat forward or backward or shifting slightly in the seat. Children can utilize a booster seat along with the vehicle’s restraint system.  For larger people, an aftermarket restraint system can be purchased and installed professionally to meet the Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. 3 Adjust the lap belt to fit low and tight across your hip and pelvis (not your stomach.) Place the shoulder belt snug across your chest; away from your neck.6 Pregnant women fasten the lap part of the belt underneath the belly and across your hips (near the pelvic bones)—never directly across your stomach . Place the chest strap between your breasts and off to the side of your belly. 7

FACT: The seat belt is there to stop you with the car, so that your stopping distance is probably 4 or 5 times greater than if you had no seat belt. Seat belts save lives because they prevent the trauma of your body being thrown into an object, through the windshield, or against the dashboard, crushed under a vehicle, scraped along the pavement, or thrown from the car at greatly accelerated forces. 4

FACT: You may be a good driver; however, you cannot control the other drivers on the road. You may be driving defensively, but a distracted or drunk driver coming around the corner or curve may not be. The statistics involving drunk drivers with motor vehicle crashes is very high.3 Distractions such as cell phone usage, searching for things in the car, and changing radio stations should be avoided. In addition, teen drivers are at special risk of crashing. Teens are inexperienced, deal with peer pressure, become easily distracted (with phones, music, talking etc.) and have a tendency to underestimate risk. 4 Every 15 seconds, someone is injured in a traffic crash. Every 13 minutes, someone is killed in a vehicle crash. 6

FACT: Whenever people are hurt or killed in accidents, they are everyone’s responsibility. The crash-related deaths costs the nation more than $1.1 million each year in loss of productivity, wages, medical expenses, administrative expenses, property damage and uninsured employer costs for crashes involving workers. The crash-related injuries resulting in disabilities cost the United States about $61,600. These dollar amounts do not even include the costs such as pain and emotional distress of victims, survivors, and their families. 4 Keep your hard-earned cash—tickets for not wearing seat belts can mean large fines and in some places, points on your license. 6

REMEMBER: Always buckle up for safety. Wearing a seat belt is not an opinion, it’s the law! 5
